요즘 저는 사진기자 은퇴 후에 사진 여정을 이어가기 위한 방법을 고민하고 있습니다.
예술은 미적 경험과 창조성을 통해 사람들에게 감정과 영감을 전달하는 통로입니다. 미적 체험은 우리 고유의 인간성과 생명력이 회복되는 데 도움이 될 거로 생각합니다.
보도사진을 하는 제가 흥미를 느끼는 사조는 20세기 초에 전체주의의 맥락에서 사용된 '포토몽타주'입니다. 은유와 상징을 사용하여 다양한 이미지를 혼합하거나 배열함으로써 새로운 관점과 의미를 창조할 가능성에 주목합니다. 저는 이 탐구를 통해 진정한 진보와 변화를 위한 새로운 사고방식을 모색하려 합니다.
These days, I am thinking about ways to continue my photography journey after I retire from being a photojournalist.
Art is a conduit that conveys emotions and inspiration to people through aesthetic experience and creativity. I believe that aesthetic experiences will help restore our unique humanity and vitality.
As a press photographer, the trend that interests me is ‘photomontage’, which was used in the context of totalitarianism in the early 20th century. We focus on the possibility of creating new perspectives and meanings by mixing or arranging various images using metaphors and symbols. Through this quest, I seek to find new ways of thinking for true progress and change.

저는 1980년대에 대학생으로 사진에 대한 열정을 발견했습니다. 사진 동아리에서 흑백 필름을 현상하고 인화하는 법을 배웠고 전시회에 적극적으로 참여했습니다.
그 당시 한국은 격동의 시대를 겪고 있었고, 민주주의 시위 중에 시민과 경찰이 자주 충돌했습니다. 저는 종종 최루탄과 화염병을 뚫고 극적인 순간을 포착했습니다. 이러한 경험은 뉴스 사진에 대한 깊은 관심을 불러일으켰습니다.
대학 시절 군에 복무한 후 1988년에 졸업하고 시사 잡지에서 사진가로 경력을 시작했으며, 2년간 일했습니다.
1990년에 저는 외신사의 서울 지사에서 사진 기자로 33년간의 여정을 시작했습니다. 긴급 뉴스와 역사적인 순간을 통해 저는 젊은 시절을 뉴스 사진에 바쳤고, 이 열정은 2023년 여름에 은퇴할 때까지 계속되었습니다.
하지만 은퇴는 제 여정의 끝이 아닙니다. 이제 저는 예술 사진작가로서 새로운 장을 맞이하고 있으며, 미학과 예술 철학을 공부하여 새로운 형태의 창의적 표현을 탐구하고 있습니다.
이 흥미로운 새로운 길을 탐색하면서 조언과 격려를 받기를 기대합니다.
I discovered my passion for photography in the 1980s as a college student, where I learned to develop and print black-and-white film in a photography club and actively participated in exhibitions.
During that time, Korea was undergoing a turbulent era, with frequent clashes between citizens and police during pro-democracy demonstrations. I captured these dramatic moments, often working through tear gas and Molotov cocktails. These experiences sparked my deep interest in news photography.
After serving in the military during college, I graduated in 1988 and began my career as a photographer at a current affairs magazine, where I worked for two years.
In 1990, I embarked on a 33-year journey as a photojournalist with the Seoul branch of an foreign news agency. Through breaking news and historic moments, I devoted my youth the news photography, a passion that continued until my retirement in the summer of 2023.
Retirement, however, is not the end of my journey. Now, I am embracing a new chapter as an art photographer, studying aesthetics and the philosophy of art to explore new forms of creative expression.
I look forward to receiving advice and encouragement as I navigate this exciting new path.
